Prayers for sadness and grief

Sadness and grief can make it hard to find any words at all. These short prayers give you somewhere to start, each with a Bible verse about God’s nearness to the brokenhearted.

A prayer for a broken heart

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.Psalm 34:18 (World English Bible)

God, my heart hurts and I don’t have many words. Thank You that I don’t need them with You.

Come close to me in this sadness. Hold what I can’t hold. I don’t ask You to rush my healing, only to stay with me in it, until joy comes again.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

When grief won’t lift

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.Psalm 147:3 (World English Bible)

Lord, this sadness has stayed longer than I expected. Some mornings it is the first thing I feel.

You are the One who binds up wounds. Be gentle with mine. Send people who will sit with me, and give me small signs of Your goodness today.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Near the broken places

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.Psalm 34:18 (World English Bible)

Lord, my heart feels bruised today, and the sadness sits low and quiet. I am not asking You to hurry it away. I am asking You to come near, the way You promise to be near the brokenhearted. Let Your peace settle around the sore places like a hand on my shoulder, steady and warm, until I can breathe a little more easily.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Weary with sorrow

My soul is weary with sorrow: strengthen me according to your word.Psalm 119:28 (World English Bible)

Lord, my soul is heavy with sorrow, and even small tasks feel tall today. Strengthen me according to Your word, not according to my mood. Hold me up through the hours that drag. Give me enough steadiness to eat, to rest, to answer a message, and to let this sadness be held by You rather than by me alone.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Tears and trust together

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the LORD.Psalm 31:24 (World English Bible)

Jesus, it takes courage just to keep hoping when I feel this sad. Strengthen my heart to keep its small flame of hope alive. I will not force a smile, but I will not give up on You either. Let my tears and my trust sit side by side today, and give me quiet courage to keep going.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Close to the broken places

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.Psalm 34:18 (World English Bible)

Lord Jesus, You stay close to the brokenhearted, so I bring You this sadness instead of hiding it. Give me strength that grows from Your nearness, not from my effort to recover quickly. Sit with me in the heaviness. Lift my crushed spirit gently, and give me the courage to let others come near as well.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sorting the sorrows

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.1 Peter 5:7 (World English Bible)

Father, worries are tangled up in my sadness, and I cannot sort them by myself. I lay each one before You, because You care for me. Help me see which sorrows need tending, which need someone else’s help, and which I can finally release. Give me the wisdom to stop picking them back up.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A broken and humbled heart

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.Psalm 51:17 (World English Bible)

God, I am sorrowful over what I have done, and the sadness sits heavy and quiet in me. I have no polished words, only a broken and humbled heart. You have said You will not despise it, so I lay it before You. Forgive me, and let this sorrow turn me toward You rather than away from You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
