Prayers for relationships
Prayers for a relationship that is growing, struggling or ending, and for the patience and love it needs.
Peace in this relationship
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.John 14:27 (World English Bible)
Father, I bring this relationship to You. Give me peace that helps me listen clearly and speak honestly. Show me how to respect the other person without losing sight of my own needs and limits. Lead us toward what is truthful and good.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Understanding this relationship
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.James 1:5 (World English Bible)
Father, guide me toward a truthful understanding of this relationship. Help me listen without losing my own voice. Show me what care, responsibility, and respect require from me. Give me wisdom about trust, boundaries, and the next conversation.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love with discernment
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.James 1:5 (World English Bible)
God, guide the way I approach the person on my heart. Help me recognize what is mine to change and what belongs to them. Let love include honesty and discernment. Show me a next step that serves dignity rather than control.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Comfort around this relationship
I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.Hebrews 13:5 (World English Bible)
God, comfort me in the relationship on my heart. Help me receive gentleness without needing an immediate resolution to every question. Show me who can offer wise, trustworthy support. Let care restore my ability to listen clearly and honor my own needs.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love is patient
If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don’t have love, I have become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don’t have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don’t have love, it profits me nothing. Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.1 Corinthians 13:1–7 (World English Bible)
Lord, this passage is easy to admire and hard to live. I can say all the right things and still be a clanging cymbal if I don’t have love. Today I need help, not just with my words, but with my heart.
Love is patient, and I am not. Love is kind, and I have been sharp. Love keeps no record of wrongs, and I have been keeping a careful list. I bring that list to You now, along with the anger underneath it.
Show me how to love the people closest to me in a way that looks like Jesus: honest without being harsh, steady without being proud, willing to bear with others as You bear with me. Forgive me where I have insisted on my own way.
Where I have been hurt, give me the grace to hope again, and wisdom to know what love asks of me here. Let love become less of an idea and more of a practice in my home and my relationships this week.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A prayer for belonging
God sets the lonely in families.Psalm 68:6 (World English Bible)
Lord, You made me for connection, and I feel far from it.
Lead me to people who will know me and love me well: a church, a friend, a home. Give me courage to reach out first. And until then, be my companion.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Help me forgive
Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.Colossians 3:13 (World English Bible)
Father, I bring You the relationship on my heart. Forgive me for the ways I have fallen short, and show me what I can put right.
Where I also need to forgive, help me do so with honesty and wise boundaries. Let Your mercy shape my next step without asking me to ignore harm.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A peaceful conversation
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.John 14:27 (World English Bible)
Lord, let Your peace shape the way I approach the relationship on my heart. Help me resist assumptions and leave room for understanding. Give me patience to hear, courage to be honest, and wisdom about when to speak or step back.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
